Mental Health Awareness : How are you feeling

 By: Noor-E-Zannat Zidny

A discussion of health & wealthness is inconceivable without mentioning mental health. However, in nations like Bangladesh, mental problems are frequently not given sufficient scientific focus and are not recognized as a severe public health issue. In Bangladesh, up to 30 million people, or about 18.4% of the adult population, experience mental health problems. 13% of children and teenagers from that group also suffer from this mental disease. Mental health is still a taboo topic despite affecting millions of people worldwide. Due to a lack of knowledge and mental health professionals in Bangladesh, many people turn to traditional healers for assistance, which can have dangerous and even fatal results. The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) epidemic has had a devastating impact on Bangladeshi society's mental health. According to one study, the prevalence of depression (57.9%), stress (59.7%), and anxiety (33.7%) symptoms among adults is currently significantly greater than it was before the epidemic. The results demonstrated a significantly greater rate of loneliness, melancholy, anxiety, and sleep disturbance among Bangladeshi people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is mental health awareness?

Mental health awareness involves increasing understanding and empathy towards individuals who experience mental health challenges, and promoting access to resources and support to help them lead healthier and happier lives. People frequently suffer in silence and have their diseases go

untreated because of misconceptions regarding mental health and mental fitness. An important social effort to raise understanding and access to healthcare is mental health awareness.

What You Can Do to Help

While mental health awareness has improved in recent years, stigma against mental illness remains a significant challenge, fueled by media stereotypes and lack of education. This stigma can hinder individuals from seeking treatment, limit access to

resources, and impact the quality of care received. People tend to attach negative stigmas to mental health conditions more than to other diseases, such as cancer or heart disease, which can leave those struggling with mental health feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

To combat this stigma, it's important to show respect and acceptance towards those with mental health conditions, advocate for their rights and equal opportunities, and educate ourselves and our communities about mental health. By breaking down these barriers, we can improve access to resources and provide better support for those struggling with mental health conditions, ultimately

leading to better outcomes for individuals and society as a whole. Here are some effective actions you can take to help:

  •   Treating individuals with mental health conditions with respect and acceptance can make a significant difference in their ability to cope with their illness. It is important for people to recognize them as individuals beyond their illness, which can have a positive impact on their mental health.

  • Taking action and advocating within our own social circles can help to ensure that individuals with mental health conditions are granted the same rights and opportunities as  other members of our community, church, or school. This can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals who are facing mental health challenges.

  • Educating ourselves on mental health can help us to better understand how to offer valuable support to those in our families and communities who are affected by mental   health challenges.
