The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

When Qatar was declared as the first Middle East country to host the world cup, the football fans and experts gave a mixed reaction and some questioned the ability of Qatar to host such a massive and large-scale event because of different factors like not having a great football history, absence of stadiums, scorching heat etc. There were many controversies circulating about Qatar from 2010 after the country was elected to host the world cup. Some mentionable controversies were corruption allegation, human rights violation as many migrant workers died or faced serious injuries, restrictions on alcohol or wearing the one love armband etc. Everyone reacted either positively or negatively towards these controversies. Even some football teams who played in the world cup protested against some decisions of Qatar. For example, the German National Football team protested against Qatar by covering their mouths with hands before the match between Germany vs Japan. But despite all those controversies and doubts, Qatar have delivered us one of the most historic world cups of all time.

The Qatar World Cup started with the opening ceremony which took place before the match between Qatar and Ecuador on 20th November. The world cup matches were played in 8 stadiums. But Qatar had only one stadium when they were announced as host. But they built seven new stadiums. Qatar spent an enormous amount of 220 billion Dollar in order to prepare themselves for the world cup.

The Qatar World Cup delivered us some of the most exciting matches, some surprises, some shocking exits etc. The 4 times world cup champion Germany was knocked out in the group stage of the world cup. On the other hand, Morocco created history and became the first African country to reach the semifinals of the world cup. We got to watch some great football matches like Argentina vs Netherlands, Argentina vs France etc. Many football experts described the final match between Argentina and France as the greatest match of all time in the history of world cup. These matches were like a roller coaster ride as they gave everyone nail biting thrill.

The Qatar World Cup ended on 18th December with the prize giving ceremony after the Argentina vs France match as Argentina became the world champions for the third time in their history. But when Argentina played their first match against Saudi Arabia and lost, no one thought that this team would end up being the champion of the world. But later they beat teams like Mexico, Netherlands, Croatia and France who are way more powerful than Saudi Arabia as a football nation. And thus, anything can happen in football which is why this sport is this much entertaining to everyone.

Lastly, let’s talk about the football fever which took over our whole country during the world cup period. The country gets divided into different groups of supporters during the world cup and they support their favorite team from miles apart with great passion. Football matches were broadcasted on big screen all over the country and the streets were painted with the flags of different football playing nation’s flag. An interesting thing occurred during this world cup and that is the people of Argentina found out about the incredible support their country gets from Bangladesh and in return they thanked us whole heartedly and the current Foreign Minister of Argentina expressed his willingness to reopen the Argentina Diplomatic Headquarters in Bangladesh. And thus, football united two nations, the people of two nations in the same bond though they are miles apart from each other and which is why it is called ‘The Beautiful Game’.
